School Counseling

The Carter High School Counseling Office is dedicated to supporting every student’s academic, career, and social–emotional growth. Each academy has its own professional school counselor—certified educators with a master’s degree or higher in school counseling—uniquely qualified to meet the developmental needs of all students.

Our counselors design and implement a comprehensive school counseling program that promotes student success both in and beyond the classroom. The Counseling Office is open daily for students to stop by, discuss academic plans, explore scholarships and financial aid opportunities, or talk through personal or social concerns.

Students should check their "Class of..." Canvas pages for up to date information or see their counselor in the CHS Counseling Office.

Carter High Counseling Program Overview

Define

Carter High School counselors use the three domains of student development—academic, college/career, and personal/social—to guide the comprehensive school counseling program. CHS counselors align programs, practices, professional standards, and ethical standards to TN DOE School Counseling Model and Standards, ASCA’s National Model, ASCA Mindsets and Behaviors, ASCA School Counselor Professional Standards and Competencies, ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counselors, and ASCA Position Statements.

Manage

Carter High School counselors align the comprehensive school counseling program with the district mission, which is to provide every student with a comprehensive school counseling program centered around an engaging curriculum that encourages growth in academic, career and personal/social domains. CHS counselors plan, schedule, and manage the counseling program, utilizing both school and district data to drive curriculum that is intentionally designed to identify specific student needs, barriers to access and success, and gaps in student opportunity and achievement.

Deliver

Carter High School counselors deliver both direct and indirect services through school counseling curriculum instruction, consultation, collaboration, and counseling services. CHS counselors deliver all students standards-based curriculum aligned to specific attitude, knowledge, and skill-based objectives throughout the academic, college/career, and personal/social domains. This includes data driven Tier I curriculum designed to meet the identified needs of the overall student populations as well as targeted data driven Tier II interventions that provide additional resources and supports to address identified student gaps or needs across all domains. Tier III short term school counseling supports will be provided to identified students when Tier II supports are not the best fit.

Assess

Carter High School counselors prioritize accountability across all parts of the comprehensive school counseling program. CHS counselors complete an annual Program Management Agreement to identify program strengths and weaknesses to drive intentional, ongoing improvements. CHS counselors examine process, perception, and outcome data from Tier I and II activities to assess the effectiveness of meeting student needs. CHS counselors annually self-assess their attitudes, knowledge, and skills based on the ASCA School Counselor Professional Standards and Competencies Assessment to facilitate professional growth. Results are shared with key stakeholders to highlight the impact of Tier I and II curriculum and obtain regular stakeholder feedback.
